Picture Monkey in South Sudan

The Samaritans Purse DC3 overflying the wreck of a Hawker 748 that crash-landed in April at the Doro airstrip, Doro, Upper Nile State, South Sudan.

As soon as I knew I’d be flying into Doro for a few days, I began planning this picture in my mind.

The SP DC3 landed shortly after we arrived at the airstrip and as it powered up for take-off I jumped on the back of a colleague’s quad bike and we raced to the opposite end of the airstrip.

I had more than enough time to compose the frame while the pilots carried out all their pre-flight checks and I was warned of the imminent approach of the aircraft by the swirling cloud of red dust thrown into the air by the incredibly powerful prop blast.
